English Summary:
The American Populist Movement took place between 1870s and 1900s. Its main participants and advocates were farmers, especially the farmers from the Mid-west of the United States. The main stages of this movement included the Granges, Farmers’ Alliances and the People’s Party. One of the roots of this movement was the gradual disappearing of the traditional American “Agrarian Myth”. In contrast to the rapid development of industry and economy in the late 1880s, the social status of most American farmers became increasingly lower, which seemed contrary to their once high social position in the past agrarian age. Farmer thus mobilized politically and called for a return to the more humane, more egalitarian political and social order in the past. To achieve this goal, populism demanded a larger role of the Federal government for the regulation of economic monopoly and in aid of the people in the lower social ladder.
