AimTo investigate the correlation between vitamin K levels and bone growth and neurodevelopment in children from Anhui region. MethodsA total of 2 687 children undergoing physical examination were retrospectively selected. The children were divided into a bone development normal group (n=2 231) and a bone development abnormal group (n=456), or a neurodevelopment normal group (n=2 534) and a neurodevelopment abnormal group (n=153) based on growth assessment. Serum vitamin K1 and K2 levels, bone metabolism indicators [calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), parathyroid hormone, type I collagen C-terminal telopeptide, type I collagen carboxy-terminal telopeptide)] were recorded. Neurodevelopment was assessed using the Griffiths Mental Development Scales. The correlation between vitamin K levels and bone metabolism indicators and Griffiths scale scores was analyzed. ResultsVitamin K1 and K2, calcium and phosphorus levels in the bone development abnormal group were lower, while ALP level was higher than those in the normal group (P<0.05). Vitamin K1 and K2 levels were positively correlated with calcium and phosphorus levels, bbut negatively correlated with ALP level (P<0.05). Vitamin K1 and K2 levels, all domain scores and the total score of the Griffiths scale in the neurodevelopment abnormal group were lower than those in the normal group (P<0.05). Vitamin K1 and K2 levels were positively correlated with the Griffiths scale scores (P<0.05). ConclusionVitamin K levels are significantly correlated with bone growth and neurodevelopment in children from Anhui region. Lower vitamin K levels are associated with higher risks of bone development and neurodevelopment abnormalities, and vitamin K levels are positively correlated with bone metabolism indicators and neurodevelopment assessment scores.
