ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of the novel melatonin agonist Neu-P11 and melatonin on memory performance in the objective recognition task in rats.MethodsThe behavioral procedure involved two phases:a 4-min training trial and a 3-min retention test trial.Neu-P11 (50 mg/kg),melatonin (50 mg/kg) and vehicle were injected 2 h before training phase in the morning or in the afternoon.The retention test was run 4 h or 24 h after training phase to assess the short-term and long-term memory performance,respectively.The total exploring time spent on the training phase and the discrimination index on the test phase was recorded.ResultsIn the short-term or the long-term memory task,there was no significant difference in the total time spent exploring between groups.Rats with Neu-P11 administrated both in the morning and in the afternoon showed more levels of the discrimination scores.Rats with melatonin administrated in the afternoon but not in the morning showed more levels of the discrimination scores.ConclusionNeu-P11 and melatonin enhance memory performance in the object recognition task in rats.Compared to melatonin,Neu-P11 exerts its effect with time-independent characters. |
