In this paper, the phenotypes of smooth muscle cells(SMCs)in aortic media were examined by electromicroscopic study, and the volume fraction of synthetic organelles and myofilaments in SMCs was detemined morphometrically. The results indicated that aortic smooth muscle cells adjoining inter elastic lamina and exter elastic lamina were all contractile phenotype, but the volume fraction of organelles of smooth muscle cells adjoining inter elaster lamina was significumtly increased. There data suggested that the increase of the volume fraction of organelles of smooth muscle cells adjoining inter elastic lamina could related with the formation and development of atherosclerosis.
