| The American Jewish writer Philip Roth’s literary description of baseball in The Great American Novel should become a new entry point for current academic circles. “Nostalgia” has become a core creative motif in Roth’s writing about baseball and recalling the American national identity. Roth resorts to baseball’s nostalgic reminiscence of American identity, focusing mainly on two aspects: American religion with Jesus Christ as the core and American political ideals of democracy and freedom. Although the cruel social reality has made all the beautiful nostalgic feelings about American identity in Roth’s mind suddenly incomplete, his nostalgic writing and reminiscence of national identity around baseball have undoubtedly become a primary premise for the study of The Great American Novel today. |
