| As one of the three great thinkers of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Wang Fuzhi's political thought exhibited a conservative tendency, which was closely linked to his views on the relationship between Jing (constant principle) and Quan (situational expediency). Wang affirmed Cheng Yi's assertion that “situational expediency is constant principle itself,” while critiquing and revising the theories on Jing-Quan put forth by Han Confucian scholars and Zhu Xi. Guided by his perspective on Jing-Quan, Wang emphasized that governing a state should “uphold the Dao” rather than “rely on penal laws”, opposing rulers who used “political tactics” to govern. Wang believed that when establishing the “founding institutions” of a dynasty, it was necessary to adapt to the times rather than blindly follow ancient systems. However, once these founding institutions were established, later generations should uphold and preserve them. Even when change was necessary, only gradual reforms within the existing institutional framework were permissible.Based on his theory of Jing-Quan, Wang no longer focused on the immediate political gains or losses of a particular era but sought to reveal the objective laws of political evolution. His thought subsequently became one of the intellectual sources of modern enlightenment movements. |
