| Lu Deming's Jingdian Shiwen of the Tang Dynasty documents two phrases whose variant characters replace the character shu (数) with suo (所), namely shu wu (数物) and shi shu li (十数里). In variant readings of these two expressions, the character shu is substituted by suo; here suo shares the same lexical meaning and grammatical function as shu, functioning as an indefinite numeral equivalent to “several / a few”. Judging by the dating of its compiled source texts, the book's compilation year and extant documentary examples, the construction “Numeral + Suo + Classifier/Noun” (exemplified by shi suo li 十所里) originated roughly in the Wei-Jin and Six Dynasties period. The two patterns, “Numeral + Suo + Classifier/Noun” and “Numeral + Classifier/Noun + Suo”, differ drastically in the part-of-speech property of suo, syntactic implication and historical origin, with no genetic affiliation between them. Meanwhile, “Numeral + Suo + Classifier/Noun” shares an identical formative mechanism with the contemporaneous construction “Numeral + Xu (许) + Classifier/Noun”. Such variant readings preserved in Jingdian Shiwen document the numeral usage of suo and the “Numeral + Suo + Classifier/Noun” construction, expanding the attested usages of suo and bearing high textual-critical value. Accordingly, Jingdian Shiwen serves not only as a rich repository for Chinese character study, phonology and traditional exegesis, but also as a crucial reference corpus for textual research and the study of historical Chinese grammar. |
