| Wei Yuan sought to break the Qing court"s impasse by exploring a path of self-strengthening, forming a distinctive military philosophy. Confronted with three interrelated challenges in resisting foreign incursions—the inherent flaws within the military system, the practical difficulties of defense against barbarians, and the temporal limitations of military governance principles—Wei Yuan constructed a military philosophy centered on “learning the barbarians" strengths to control the barbarians.” This framework was underpinned by three cognitive logics: understanding the barbarians to control them; historical logic integrating tradition and modernity; and practical logic coordinating internal cultivation with external defense. Through local adaptation, pragmatic orientation, and leveraging enemy strengths, Wei achieved a theoretical breakthrough in traditional military thought, established a framework for modern national defense construction, and ignited a spiritual awakening of self-strengthening against foreign aggression. His ideas thus provided crucial intellectual resources for modern China"s military reform and national salvation efforts. |
