This study explores the impact of the pilot free trade zone policy on green innovation efficiency with the help of the double-difference method using panel data from 284 cities in China from 2004 to 2021. The findings show that this policy significantly enhances the green innovation efficiency in the pilot area, and multiple robustness tests verify the reliability of this conclusion. Mechanism analyses show that this policy improves green innovation efficiency in the pilot region by promoting green technology innovation, enhancing industrial agglomeration and reducing resource dependence. In addition, the policy is found to be more effective in eastern, coastal and low resource-dependent cities. |
