English Summary: |
i>The Interpreters is the first novel of the African writer Wole Soyinka on the eve of the Nigerian civil war which depicts a tough circumstance of five overseas students contributing themselves to their country. In the midst of hardship, many kinds of marginal figures appears:the albinos Usaye and Lazarus, and the biracial person Golder bent on being black that are the interpreters of “complexion”. The contest between black and white appears as though traditional culture comes into fierce collision with colonial thoughts. Soyinka introduces these characters into Yoruba myth, using the tradition to awaken this “sleeping” country and strengthen national consciousness. The albinism in the novel is a metaphor for “the whitening” of individual thought, becoming the representative of the colonists. In contrast, the “blackened” Golder from sunburn defends his spiritual home with stiff resistance. With these marginal figures, Soyinka satirizes Nigerian corrupt politics and expresses strong anti-colonial ideas and expectations for the awakening of national consciousness. |
