| By analyzing the similarities of the languages and actions between Richard Rowen, Robert Hand, and James Joyce, as well as the biographical materials and personal writings of James Joyce, this paper tries to prove that Richard and Robert share a lot of similarities in their passion, their roles as “seducers” and that they could be even the two selves of the same person. James Joyce is not only the autobiographical prototype of Richard but also that of Robert in Exiles. James Joyce divides and projects himself into two characters. Young Joyce and Robert both share the journalist experience and the similar opinion on sex and desire. In Exiles, Joyce re-organizes his complicated and random living and thinking experiences and distributes them unto Richard and Robert, while at the same time, he keeps his distance with them and by using static forms, creates an ironic tension in the play. |
