      文章对英语笑话译成汉语的不可译性问题进行了经验式分析。文章依据泽巴尔宾斯柯亚对笑话的分类原则选取了九个笑话,运用卡特福特的语言和文化不可译性理论、柯平的社会符号学理论和图里的目标语中心论进行深入探讨。结论是三种理论单独运用时都存在局限性,综合使用三种理论分析不可译性显得更为科学。
English Summary:
      This study is an empirical study of the translatability and untranslatability of Chinese jokes into English. The paper analyzed nine jokes, each of which belongs to one of the categories set up by Zabalbeascoa. The translatability of the jokes is discussed according to three approaches to translatability: Catford’s division between linguistic and cultural untranslatability, Ke’s socio-semiotic view, and Toury’s target-oriented approach. The conclusion is that each approach has shortcomings, notably so when applied in isolation.
