| With the semantic analysis of understatement, this paper aims to discuss how relevent theory can be employed to interpret the working mechanism of understatement. The conclusion is: understatement is one of the particularized conversational implicature, which treats context as its frame, the gradable contrast, relational contrast and hyponymy as its semantic features. The meaning of understatement is much concerned with the pragmatic reference. |
